Handmade Japanese Akabeko Folk Art Paper Craft & Wood Red Cow Toy
This Vintage Folk Art Paper Craft Red Akabeko Toy. The Japanese word Akabeko literally translates to "red cow". It is claimed that the toy is based on a real cow that would not leave a temple that he was used to help build in the 9th century and had devoted his life to the Buddha. It is thought that the Akabeko toy wards off illness. The toy is made from 2 pieces of paper mache covered wood that is wrapped, shaped & painted to look like a red cow. The bobble head hangs from a string and fits into the opening of the hollow body.
This vintage Akabeko toy is in excellent condition with no noted damage. The fringe around the neck is starting to fray at the ends, which is expected. Measures approximately 2 1/3" High by 3 1/2" Long by 2" Wide.
